Walking on Air - The Bolesworth International Arena

Riders and spectators alike love visiting The Equerry Bolesworth International Horse Show for the thrills of world-class show jumping, the highs and lows of dancing dressage horses and a host of exceptional family entertainment.

The five-day event offers a unique and very special experience, combining top-level dressage and showjumping competitions with great shopping, a host of thrilling water sports on the lake and fun family attractions.

When show jumping at the highest level or competing at Grand Prix dressage the standard of the arena surface is vital, and that supported by a stunning backdrop such as Bolesworth Castle makes for an event like no other.

Top riders frequently comment on how good the "going" is in the international arena. Having a specially designed surface that can protect horses from injuring themselves is essential, particularly for top-level showjumpers and dressage horses, whose legs and joints undergo great pressure during competition.

For this reason, Show President Nina Barbour, wanted the very best and invested in a surface from renowned manufacturer Andrews Bowen.

Nina had the vision that an amphitheatre style arena, complete with its very own moat, VIP hospitality along one side, a champagne bar, seating and marquees, together with the castle background would produce a feel and atmosphere second to none.

"We have created a spectacular international equestrian event here at Bolesworth, so it was vitally important that we invested in the best possible surface. The Andrews Bowen arena is truly the jewel in our crown and we're delighted we receive so many compliments on it."

David Andrews said:

"Andrews Bowen are delighted with the high level of positive response to our design and construction of the site at Bolesworth, it is fantastic to have been involved in the development of one of the best show jumping venues in the world. The inclusion of top level dressage now completes the picture."

Commenting on the Bolesworth International Arena, legendary showjumper John Whittaker said:

"The arena is superb, with a brilliant surface, it is a fantastic setting and everything about it is as good as anywhere you would go."

Fellow showjumper Harriet Nuttall agrees:

"The facilities are great, and the arenas are stunning."

Added dressage maestro Carl Hester:

"The venue is stunning, the footing is stunning, and I'm delighted the team is developing the dressage in such an amazing setting."

The main arena is made with the Andrews Bowen 2012 mix, which was developed specifically for the London 2012 Olympics.

The surface is proven for the full range of Olympic and Paralympic disciplines and endorsed by the FEI. Made from multi-washed silica sand, three types of polypropylene fibre and a synthetic binder, the surface delivers a huge step forward in performance surface technology that reduces repetitive strain injury in horses.

Lars Roepstorff, professor in equine functional anatomy at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, has been carrying out research on the properties of equestrian surfaces around the world as part of a long-term scientific footing study for the FEI. He believes the London 2012 mix (used at the Olympic equestrian events), to be amongst the best and particularly the most consistent he has worked on.
